This semester, we accepted the opportunity to participate in the Service Based Learning program, to address the issue of Food Insecurity in our community. To complete the assignment, we’ve conducted a series of interviews and research in relation to the topic. This process required a minimum of 15 hours of service/ volunteer time, weekly reflections and a final evaluation, which has left a lasting impact on us all.
Learn more about our process here.
Service based learning is a teaching and learning approach that many colleges offer to enhance the learning experience, by assimilating community service with a structured learning curriculum, benefiting students and the community alike.

To complete this projects, we’ve coordinated research from several articles on Food Insecurity and it’s affects; many of which were published by Feeding America, a leader of over 200 food banks nationally. We’ve also participated in interviews, including our recent interview with Brian Greene, the CEO & President of the Houston Food Bank; and finally we used the Little Free Pantry’s Pilot Free Pantry Plans and Materials Lists.
When CrossPoint Community Church was asked about being apart of our Little Pantry project, with no hesitation they were happy to help us with a spot for the pantry. HCC students thank you again for being apart of this project.
The pantry, as well as the church are located:
700 WESTGREEN BLVD,
KATY, TX 77450
This is a location where our neighbors can discretely take or leave nonperishable food items or toiletries.
